A common question when it comes to feeding horses is whether or not they should be fed after being ridden. The rule of thumb is to wait an hour after you ride your horse. This is because you don’t want to feed the horse while they are still hot. You want to ensure that your horse has had plenty of time to cool down after your ride to prevent any chance of colic.

On a similar note, you also don’t want to ride your horse right after he has eaten. It is ideal to give him an hour to digest his food before being ridden. You can ride a horse that has only been eating hay or grass though.

The Associated Press: Mine That Bird heads to Pimlico.

Wow, Borel won’t be riding Mine That Bird in the Preakness and has opted for Rachel Alexandra instead.  Do you think Mike Smith can pull off the ride that this gelding will need to take the second leg of the Triple Crown?  I hope so, I want nothing more than to see some guys from West Texas take the Triple Crown.  But, does that also mean that Borel thinks Rachel Alexandra has a better shot at winning the Preakness.  She was, after all, his favorite ride the weekend of the Oaks and the Derby, and you really can’t blame him for that.

Mine That Bird is also currently on his way from Churchill to Pimlico.  The track “tweeted” it this morning.

The Littlest Bull

Child’s book author Linda Chambers is announcing her latest book has gone to print.  The Littlest Bull is a ballad that tells the story of a young girl that defies her father and takes a motherless calf to raise.  It is another great book by Linda that evokes the tradition of the Great American West.

The book is also illustrated by renowned Cowboy Artists Justin and Jack Wells.  The majority of the illustrations are by the late Justin Wells of Amarillo, Texas.  Unfortunately, Justin passed from a fatal heart attack near the end of the project.  It was only fitting that his brother, Jack, complete the last few illustrations required to complete the book.

If your children love the Cowboy lifestyle and the Old West, then they will love this book as well as others written  by Linda Chambers.

Blaze’s Tribute Equine Rescue, Inc. located in Jones, Oklahoma, is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that strives to improve the lives of neglected, starved, and abused horses.  We provide equine rescue regardless of age or disability.  We promote and teach horse care and humane, natural methods of training horses.
Emergency Assistance Requested:

Blaze’s Tribute Equine Rescue was contacted by the Beckham County Sheriff’s Office on April 30, 2009 to assist with the Seizure of 51 horses and Donkeys.  Beckham County Sheriff’s Office found 51 neglected and severely malnourished horses starving in Sayre, Oklahoma and 48 dead carcasses on the property.  These horses needed immediate assistance.  Beckham County contacted us and we seized the horses on May 1, 2009.

Blaze’s Equine Rescue is making an emergency plea for foster homes, monetary donations to cover medical expenses, Hay donations, and grain donations.  We also need adopters for some of the horses that were already in our rescue program.

All horses going into foster care will have their medical work up done before leaving.  Our Veterinarian is schedule to examine every horse on Monday and we will need horses placed into foster care immediately following.  We ask that foster homes, please provide grain and hay, a tax donation receipt will be supplied at the end of the foster term.  We ask that you please keep an open mind during this case and be expected to foster for at least 6 months.  Blaze’s Equine Rescue will cover the expenses of pre-approved Veterinary and Farrier Expenses.  Please e-mail Natalee at blazesequineresc@aol.com if you are able to help in anyway or call at 405-399-3084.  This is an on-going Animal Cruelty case and none of these horses will be available for adoption until the disposition of the animals are made.  We are looking for a court ordered forfeiture of all 51 horses.

Saturday’s Kentucky Derby was most definitely a shocker, but it was even more shocking for people in West Texas and New Mexico.  The winner, Mine That Bird, is trained by Bennie “Chip” Woolley, Jr.  The local newspaper, Amarillo.com, tweeted not long after the results were final that Woolley was from Dalhart, Texas – not far from Amarillo.

However, everyone knows that Woolley hauled Mine That Bird all the way from New Mexico via truck and trailer to compete in the Derby.  So, fittingly, Bloomfield, New Mexico (not far from Farmington) is claiming the horse and trainer as well.

Okay, so I’ve been to Cubs games, Saints games, Cowboys games and Maverick’s games. It’s time for my husband to enjoy some equine activities for a change. We can’t make this year because we have another vacation planned to close to the first Saturday in May, but I am going to the Derby next year. I cannot wait. I’m going to start planning the trip tomorrow. If you have any suggestions of things to do and places to eat in Louisville, I’m all ears.
